PORTRAIT DRAWINGS

Elegant, uncluttered and flowing, a charcoal portrait can capture the essence of character and personality using little more than a few masterly placed lines and tones.  The economy of line and tone belies the huge amount of  time, concentration and dexterity it takes to place those marks.

PORTRAIT PAINTINGS

Nothing compares to the rich range of tones and colours that oil paint offers. With time and skill an artist can achieve a likeness and presence in a portrait where the figure appears alive. Seeing such resemblance to someone we know or even ourselves is endlessly fascinating.  Nothing holds our attention quite like a portrait painted in oils.

How to Commission a Portrait Online
(Working only from Photographs)

Sometimes I have only photos to work from  which means the entire process can be done online. Instances when this is the best method of working are memorial portraits, or of someone living abroad, or when the portrait is a surprise gift.  With a few clear pictures I can do a beautiful job, even if I don't meet the subject.

Step 1: Making Contact

Send photos you wish me to work from. I will guide you through various options so you end up with the portrait of your choice.

Step 2: The Commission Form

When we have agreed on the portrait options best suited to you, we complete a 'Commission Form;' an agreement between artist and client. When signed by both parties a deposit is paid. This can be done online or by post.

Step 4: The Painting/Drawing Begins

For works that take several weeks I am happy to email photos of work in progress. This gives

the client a wonderful record and rare insight to the various stages of portraiture.

Step 5: The Final Touches

When the final touches and highlights are placed a photo of the artwork is emailed to the client for final approval.

Step 6: Final Payment: Collection/Dispatch

Subject to satisfaction from the client and compliance with the Commission Form, the outstanding balance is paid. The portrait is then ready to be collected/dispatched.

How to Commission a Portrait
(with 'A Sitting' and a 'Photo-Shoot')

One of the most enduring ways to celebrate an occasion or achievement is to commission a portrait. These works of art give huge pleasure for many years  and  often  become,  for future generations, a priceless family heirloom.

Step 1: Making Contact

Contact/visit me so we can chat about the kind of portrait you are looking for. I will guide you through various options so you receive the kind of  portrait of your choice. It is important not to rush and to enjoy the process. I do!

Step 2: The Commission Form

A Commission Form is completed which  is an agreement between artist and client. When signed by both parties a deposit is paid.

Step 3: The First Sitting

Meeting the subject for real helps greatly with the portrait. Body language, movement, personality and character all contribute to the process. Colour studies of skin, hair and eyes are made. This process normally takes an hour to an hour and a half.

Step 4: The Photo-Shoot

This can be done at the clients location or in my studio. Various backdrops which I provide can also be used.

Step 5: The Painting/Drawing Begins

I am happy to email photos of work in progress. This gives the client a wonderful record and rare insight to the various stages of portraiture.

Step 6: The Final Touches

When the final touches and highlights are placed a photo of the artwork is emailed to the client for approval.

Step 7: Framing

We have a range of frames, selected over years suited to my work. It is standard practice for us to frame artwork. If a client prefers to frame the work themselves we are happy to leave the work unframed.

Step 7: Final Payment: Collection/Dispatch

Subject to satisfaction from the client and compliance with the 'Commission Form' the outstanding balance is paid. The portrait is then ready to be collected/dispatched.
